As the project lead for this game, my responsibilities involved developing the original concept, designating roles and jobs to teammates, and checking in with the team through weekly "agile" meetings to see what progress had been made and address any problems that arose. I also worked as a programmer to help create the complex structure of transitioning from visual-novel-style levels to action sequences.
The biggest challenge this project brought was figuring out how to smoothly and effectively make these two different genres work together and compliment one another. During development, my team was surprised by how much time we spent tuning the pacing of the game. Through playtesting, we found that moving from action sequences to dialogue, and then back to action, was rather jarring, so we put a lot of effort into making the action gameplay wind up and down smoothly to transition into and out of the novel. We also focused on writing punchy and engaging dialogue so that the player is entertained throughout even the lower-energy parts of the game.
